Canvas Migration Timeline

This has been a huge team effort – involving college students, staff and governors. We also engaged with some inspirational external thinkers in the field of digital technologies and tested our thinking with local employers.

Summer 2014


Following a review of our Moodle system in 2013-14, we selected Canvas as a replacement and lecturers were invited to volunteer to become part of a trailblazing group.

Winter 2014


Applying the principles of Design Thinking we developed a Canvas Road Map and tested this out with students and staff. All lecturers received basic training in Canvas and were given a Canvas Sandbox to experiment with course creation. Single sign-on implementation was completed.

January 2015

Pilot Courses Start

Courses were identified from across College to take part in a supported pilot project. Staff received additional training and course creation started. Integration with College systems was completed.

February - July 2015

Supported Migration Process

Rollout of a portfolio of training to staff with support from trailblazers. All staff were encouraged to experiment using Canvas whilst Moodle ran in parallel. All lecturers completed Digital Action Plans for 2015-2016. Drop in sessions were timetabled for lecturers to review their courses with their allocated E-learning Designer.

August 2015

Moodle Retired

Digital Action Plans were monitored to ensure that course development for September remained on track. Intensive support was available throughout the summer months provided by the Digital Central team. Archive of Moodle completed.

September 2015

Canvas Launched

All full-time courses have a Canvas course to support Blended Learning across the curriculum in line with the College’s Digital Central Strategy. All students complete a Digital Central Induction on Canvas. Lecturers are supported through a caseload approach by the Digital Central team.
